Abstract
This chapter describes a systematic screening approach to assess and manage the potential impact of climate change on development projects and programmes, piloted in the water sector in China. The adaptation screening framework was piloted in three phases, which operate at increasing levels of detail. The three phases are rapid qualitative analysis, semi‐quantitative and quantitative analysis, and adaptation options assessment using multiple criteria analysis. A worked example from one of the case studies is presented for each phase to illustrate the process. The case studies highlight the importance of considering the wider implications of adaptation measures including risk transmission and maladaptation. The multi‐criteria analysis provides a useful means of informing the decision‐making process by providing a systematic basis to evaluate the many aspects of adapting to future climate change, in addition to evaluation of the economic efficiency of measures from cost‐benefit analysis.
