Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book highlights different European legal orders show differing levels of flexibility in recognising Islamic legal and religious rules. It provides considerable detail about his model of ‘cultural navigation’, which basically signifies the switching of codes in majority and minority arenas according to circumstance. The book provides an overview of legal approaches to the Islamic presence within Europe’s legal orders. It discusses the recent case law of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on the issue of citizenship of the EU. The citizenship concept was originally introduced into EU law by the Treaty on European Union at Maastricht and has since been the subject of much commentary because of the expansionist approach taken by the ECJ to its interpretation. The book explains how another partner, Turkey, has been adjusting its migration control regime with the prospect of EU membership in view.
