Atonements in the Rituals of the Terāpanth Śvetāmbara Jaina Mendicants

Abstract

The article offers text, transliteration, and analysis of the handwritten manuscript of the Prāyaścitta-Vidhi, Method of Atonement, for the Terāpanth Ṣvetāmbara mendicant order, composed in a mixture of Prakrit and Hindi by Ācārya Tulsī in 1962. It is the first publication of a text of daily use in Jaina monastic life of his kind. The article supplements the 1965 work of Colette Caillat on the rites of atonement prescribed in the Cheyasuttas of the Śvetāmbara canon and their commentaries.
