Abstract
This case study proposes an expanded model of shadow research for collaborative field research. I draw on my experience on a collaborative pilot study on women associated with armed groups in Maiduguri, Northern Nigeria. This case study draws on the reflective engagement between the research partners and I to illustrate the opportunities in an adaptive model of shadow research for thinking about the technologies of doing collaborative research. I argue that an adaptive shadow research model can challenge and minimise power hierarchies between local and external researchers. This model offers an opportunity to rethink collaborative research partnerships on the move, particularly where power relations are magnified by gender, class, race, and institutional privilege.
