Abstract

This article explores the historical institutionalism inherent in Korea's National Gugak Centre and the circular exchange mechanisms of the gugak fraternity (schools, colleges, ensembles, orchestras, concerts). I distinguish between court and aristocratic traditions known in previous centuries to a small percentage of the Korean population from the more various min'gan traditions, and show how methodologies and practices developed for the former have been emulated by those within the latter.
