Abstract

A Book of Friends is a collection of essays, stories, poems and artworks compiled in honour of J. M. Coetzee on his eightieth birthday. It includes contributions from some of Coetzee’s friends and contemporaries, and is edited by Dorothy Driver, his partner over the past four decades. Stretching from the Americas to South Africa to Australia, A Book of Friends pays homage to friendship, literature and the work of one of the most extraordinary writers of our time.

• Additional Information: Additional Information : As a research fellow at the Harry Ransom Center in 2018, over several weeks I was able to regularly visit their major exhibition on the artist Ed Ruscha. This inspired, '3 French !!!', a triptych of real signs from my travels for an essay film in collaboration with Rick Barney and John Coetzee. This is the project Roads of France, a triptych of scenes and text from Coetzee's cycling routes in south-west France. A Book of Friends was edited by Coetzee's partner, Dorothy Driver, and was launched at our exhibition, Scenes from the South, on the occasion of his 80th birthday (Amazwi South African Museum of Literature, Makhanda, Eastern Cape).
