Abstract

This chapter examines the complex relationship between migration and security. It begins by providing an overview of the ways that migration can affect both national and human security. It then outlines three areas of research on migration and security, including how migration relates to the foreign and security policies of states; the relationship between migration and the diffusion of violent conflicts; and the politics of how migration comes to be treated as a security issue. The chapter concludes with some new areas of research, including the nexus between migration and public health, and a discussion of the policy and ethical issues surrounding migration and security.
