Abstract
The present thesis is the first attempt to write a comprehensive history of the Lower Indus Country from c.A.D.1 to 150. The whole treatise is divided into two volumes, the first containing the text and the second notes on the text and bibliography. Book I of the first volume is subdivided into three chapters. In chapter I we have discussed the scope, sources and the scheme of our work. We have tried to determine the geographical and economic background and the political background of our zone and period in chapters II and III respectively. Chapters I-IV of book II contain; mainly the political history and in chapter V are discussed the material and cultural aspects of the history of the Lower Indus Country from c. A.D.1 to 150, In chapter VI we have stated our final conclusions from the data furnished in the preceding five chapters. Book III, subdivided into four chapters, contains the results of our attempts to solve certain chronological problems connected with the history of the Lower Indus Country, Appendix I of book IV treats the Kushana genealogy and appendices II and III deal respectively with the problems of the advent of Kanishka I in the Deccan and the age, circulation and historicity of a Kanishka-Satavahana legend. Discussions on all these topics are relevant to our study. Sections I - XVI of book V in volume II contains notes on the chapters in volume I. contains Section XVII continue a bibliography. There is a map of India and another of the Lower Indus Country and a sketch showing the ground-plan of the Gautamiputra cave at Nasik at the end of volume II.
