Abstract
It’s been criticised as ‘unacceptable’ and a ‘serious blow to democracy’ by the UN. World leaders have been swift in condemning Myanmar’s coup. The international community is demanding democracy be restored. And it’s calling for the release of the de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures detained by the military. The coup leaders say the takeover is temporary and have promised elections in a year. But that hasn’t stopped threats of sanctions, particularly by the U.S. And the UN security council has called for an emergency meeting on the situation on Tuesday.
