Abstract

The article discusses the role of monastic councils in the history of Jainism and analyses the unscripted rules of procedure of the great council (bṛhad sammelana) of the mendicants of the Sthānakavāsī Śramaṇasaṅgha 20-29 March 2016 in Indore. Two issues were at stake at the sammelana: (a) selection of the predestined successor to the head of the order,(b)constitutional reform.
